| NEW SUSPENSION PARTS??? AUG 07 |
8-22-07 So much stuff is going on its very hard to keep up. It was pointed out
that when under hard braking the nose of the car was diving and a thumping
noise in front had developed. We decided to lower the rear more to try to
correct the nose diving, and pushing. We took the GTO in to Waukegan Tire to
install even lower springs in the rear. The front springs are 3/8'' and the rears
are 1/2'' lower. This time we're going to install 1 1/4'' lowers in the rear to really
get the ass end down. The tech at Waukegan Tire, who's name is also Ken,
looked over the GTO first to see how everything was looking, since they
installed all the suspension bushings earlier this year. Upon inspection Ken
found a torn bushing and decided to replace it.
In order to replace the bushing Ken had to remove the strut. He did one side at
a time, and when it was time to reinstall the strut he noticed that the rubber dust
boot was cracked and oil was leaking from the seal. (GREAT, what else could
go wrong) He removed the spring and.....
OK this really sucks!!!!! Now that my budget is out the window what else could
happen, RIGHT? WRONG!!!!!! The rear shocks were worse than the front
struts. When we got back to installing the rear lowering springs Ken took one
of the shocks off just to check and it was done for, so we replaced the rear
shocks too. Well I'm glad Waukegan Tire had the replacements in stock.
These are direct replacements for the OEM. As a matter of fact, Pontiac has
had a leaking problem with their struts and has used these same struts for
replacement under the factory warranty. To bad ours can't be covered under
warranty but the time has expired.
Now for the rest of the bad news. While Ken was getting the parts, I was
checking out the underside of the GTO and spotted a crack in the rear rotor.
Upon further inspection, I found multiple cracks on both rotors.
Looks like we'll have to dig out the stock rotors for the Nats. seeing as we are
sooo broke after the unexpected cost of the struts and shocks.
